THE SYNTHESIS OF THE DIARIOS DE CAMPO:

Teacher David and I have created a nice bound, our students ask lots of questions; most of them turn in their homework assignments on time. They join the zoom meetings, their parents don't make much money, they study in a very decent school.  We have met a couple of times during the last four months, teacher David lives far from my house, I always ride my motorcycle to get to his house. He has a little dog and a daughter. Students have made good progress so far.

THE DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:

The name of my beloved school is Carlos Lleras Restrepo, it is a type of school where a lot of teenagers from my hood (poor kids) would have to go to, unfortunately. Thank God, they offer all education levels, meaning, it’s got preschool classes to the high school ones. The school location is rural, not fat from my house, maybe it’s two blocks away, how lucky will I be, when the pandemic stops and I get to go there.

Of course, virtual encounters are what classes have been all about, whether you like it or not, it’s all we got right, at least, it’s happening in our department. The kids and their parents’ economic stratification is so easy to tell, they have just enough food for the day, and work is so little (“rebusque”) The school year began in January and will go until December, (both, the principal and coordinators said that: “face to face class will be a thing again real soon”). The number of students in the course is 28, most of them have a basic level of the English language. They like sports and social media networks (video games too) and some of them dislike studying to say the least.

On the other hand, their learning needs need to be met pretty soon, but first, a lot of them do need data, good wifi-conectivity, because, even the power has been going out and coming back so many times, it just makes so much harder for them to get involved and participate during the zoom calls.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE:

THE MOST REMARKABLE MOMENTS:

Every Friday, meeting together as a group. Also, I enjoyed working and sitting down with teacher David, once a week, so to speak.

THREE CONCLUSIONS:

-        The longer I spend teaching students the more I realize how challenging teaching becomes.

-        Sometimes, some activities won't just work out perfectly. Not only because students have different likes and dislikes, but they all learn differently.

-        Tools are meant to help us (the teachers) make learning easy and fun for students and even to ourselves.

TWO METHODS FROM UNITS 1, 2 AND 3:

UNIT 1:

1- Grammar Translation Method

Tests of grammar rules and of translations are easy to construct. Class activities or learning games are rarely necessary, as students are translating text to another language directly.

2- Audiolingual Method

The idea is for the students to practice the particular construct until they can use it spontaneously.

UNIT 2:

1- The Silent Way Method

The teacher should be silent as much as possible in the classroom but the learner should be encouraged to produce as much language as possible.

2- The Natural Method

It’s got no rules at all, it makes students use language without learning rules nor following them.

UNIT 3:

1- The Task-Based Learning Method

It encourages sequencing activities and sometimes, it involves an authentic use of language, rather than completing simple language questions about grammar or vocabulary.

2- The Cooperative Language Learning Method

It promotes heterogeneous groups, when all students work collaboratively and cooperatively for one common goal.
